Fun Facts

  • The Common Grackle is an opportunistic feeder – this means it takes advantage of whatever energy sources it comes across. It will wade in water to grab small fish and even has been known to kill other birds at birdfeeders.
  • The Common Grackle attempts to rid its body of parasites in various and interesting ways. One of these ways is called “anting”. This is where Grackles allow ants to crawl on their body in order to secrete formic acid. Also it can use walnut juice, lemons and limes, marigold blossoms, choke cherries, and mothballs in a comparable manner.
  • The Common Grackle has benefited from human activities, especially agriculture. The grain and open spaces of many farms has helped the bird’s winter survival.
