Fun Facts

  • Chimney swifts are seldom seen except while in flight; feed, drink and gather nesting materials all during flight; often called a "flying cigar" due to its body shape.
  • Swifts cannot perch, they can only cling to vertical surfaces.
  • An illusion of Chimney Swifts beating their wings alternately is common. The birds in fact beat their wings at the same time yet the illusion is created due to the rapid aerial banking and turning while in flight.
  • They form their nests out of their own saliva.
